What we get called out for

Rooms and hallways
Hot water extraction, walk-on dry in a couple of hours. Traffic lanes are the usual reason we are rung.

Stairs and landings
The hardest-worked carpet in the house, done tread by tread with a hand tool.

Rugs
Cleaned flat on a groundsheet, dyes tested first. Delicate fibres get a low-moisture clean.

Sofas and chairs
Upholstery tool at lower pressure, fabric code checked before anything gets wet.
Working in Finchley
Finchley's three centres carry three slightly different builds. Church End and East Finchley have Edwardian and late-Victorian terraces and semis on the roads off Ballards Lane and East End Road, generally with original floorboards under fitted carpet. North Finchley, Woodside Park and West Finchley are dominated by 1930s bay-fronted semis and detached houses put up alongside the Northern Heights extension of the Underground in the late 1930s, most with front and rear gardens and generous hallways. Later infill has added purpose-built low-rise blocks along the High Road and a run of new apartments around Tally Ho.
Thames Water supplies hard water across north London, so wool and wool-mix carpets in the interwar houses need an acidified rinse or they dry with a dull, crunchy pile.
Barnet operates controlled parking zones around Finchley Central, East Finchley and the North Finchley High Road, and the unrestricted roads just outside them fill with commuter cars by 08:30, so morning jobs get booked on the driveway wherever there is one.
The 1930s semis nearly all have wool carpet running hall to stairs to landing in one continuous piece, and a large share have loft conversions adding a third narrow flight, which makes the stair run the longest part of the job.
The water here is hard, which makes no difference to the extraction rinse. What slows drying in these houses is closed trickle vents, so we open windows while we work.
Prices
Priced per room, agreed on the phone and not changed on the doorstep. A bedroom is £36, a living room £43. Rugs, sofas and mattresses can join the same visit, because the machine is already in the house.
